The state of our political system here in the US right now is appalling. We have an entire Republican party catering to a minority group of occasional voters, you know the kind, they only go to the ballot box if they're sober enough and if they're trying to prove something...like Trumpism (which totally escapes me...I mean, Trump's policies completely screwed these low income people over, yet here they are, worshipping him like a god).
Instead of accepting that this fringe group is a minority sect of our society who is not living in our reality, Republican leaders have instead decided to enter their reality, pass laws to restrict sane people from being able to vote, and what exactly IS their next step? Are they going to just cross their fingers and hope that somehow insanity overtakes everyone if by some freak occurrence their voter suppression actually works and Trump is re-elected? I don't think Donald Trump has any inkling of a chance of stepping foot inside the Oval Office ever again.
Many Trump supporters have made claims that a civil war is on the horizon. Basically, if they can't get their way, they're going to throw a temper tantrum and start killing people over it. I could say: if you want to rage against the entire country and threaten to kill people because the person you want as a dictator didn't win, get out. Go. But I'd be a hypocrite if I believe in freedom of speech, then kick people out for speaking their minds.
On the other side of the aisle I see Democrats trying desperately to get through to Republicans who are determined to go down in history as the stupidest group of politicians to ever pass through Washington. What's frustrating is the fact that Democrats know, definitively, that legislation that they are trying to pass to benefit all Americans is going to go nowhere because Republicans continue to block every effort.
The voting rights bill is the one that tickles me the most. "It's a partisan effort [by democrats] to take over how you do, how you conduct elections," - Mitch McConnell. Really? So there are no Republicans in the federal government? Dude, please. Standardizing voting regulations ensures that everyone is treated fairly. By giving each state the right to change the rules however they see fit; that's how discrimination happens. Of course, the senator from Kentucky knows that quite well, doesn't he?
It's true, Republicans are pushing for conflict. They have been for a while. They truly believe that Democrats or "libtards" as we're often called, are pussies who will stand there and just die if they were to attack us. All of this is false. If necessary, non-violent people can certainly defend themselves, as was demonstrated on January 6. But the truth is, I am getting pretty tired of watching this country swirl down the drain, and I'm not the only one. The more push back Republicans give on the social reforms this country desperately needs, the more they cater to fringe delusional groups, the more they diverge from core values they once upheld, the more I realize that this is not the America I want to be in. If I feel that way, I know others do, too.
There are a lot of high skilled, intelligent people watching this circus unfold. Once they actually do the research to find that the so-called "outrageous" cost of living in socio-capitalistic countries isn't so outrageous, who knows what will happen. The cost of living is comparable in Denmark and lower in Sweden. It's a bit higher in Canada, but that evens out when you take into consideration that rent tends to be quite a bit cheaper. The plus side to all of these places is that they have safety nets in place to give peace of mind. The path to citizenship requires long-term residency, social contribution (usually employment), and in some cases learning the language.
Perhaps a second American civil war is immanent. Maybe the mysterious Q-Anon will lead the forces of Trump into a battle for the future of the country. Who knows. We've seen several battles all over this country that continue to push it further and further down the drain. I really hope that my foresight is keen enough so I can get myself out of here before this country completely destroys itself.
